Studio Workshop: En Plein Air Landscapes

Impressionists transformed landscape painting by taking their tools and materials en plein air (outside)  to capture the likeness of a natural setting at a specific moment. Join teaching and practicing artist Megan Lightell for a one-day workshop to experience painting en plein air, with Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, and Their Times: The Mellon Collection of French Art from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts as inspiration. Tour the exhibition at the Frist Art Museum and then enjoy a boxed lunch while Lightell introduces basic concepts of painting en plein air. In the afternoon, create a small oil painting outdoors, on location. With your classmates, explore issues of site selection, choosing a composition, working with a limited palette to build color harmony, and basic handling of oil paint. All skill levels are welcome. 

 

Born in rural Coshocton County, Ohio, Megan Lightell grew up among quiet fields and farms—imagery that rests at the core of her work today. After earning a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2000, she began making paintings that considering the connection between humans and the environment that sustains them. She has lived and worked in Nashville since 2002 and is represented by Zeitgeist Gallery. Recent projects include visual and narrative collaborations with farmers in specific regions of Ohio and Kentucky, and a collection of paintings focused on sites protected by the Land Trust for Tennessee.
